Choosing the Right Sunscreen
Did you know that according to the American Cancer Society, more than 2 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the US each year? The best way to protect your skin (your largest organ) from the sun is to always seek shade when possible, and use protective clothing like hats, eyeglasses, long sleeves, and pants. But if those options are not available, you should use sunscreen if you are going to be outside for a long period of time. But do you know which sunscreen is the safest to put on your skin?

When choosing a sunscreen, look for one that protect from both UV-A and UV-B radiation. These forms of radiation are shown to cause tanning, sunburns, wrinkling, premature aging, and skin cancer after long exposures in the sun without protection.

Chemical or Physical Sunscreen?
Chemical sunscreens – Work by absorbing UV radiation.
• Apply 30 minutes before sun exposure.
• Known to irritate eyes and skin.
• The most common chemical UV filter ingredient is Avobenzone, which degrades after being exposed to sunlight in less than one hour. It also degrades on contact with other UV filters such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and with metal ions such as iron oxide, which is commonly found in makeup.

Avobenzone has been found to produce free radicals after just sitting on the skin for one hour. Children and pregnant women are advised not to use products containing it.

Octocrylene, which is used in many chemical sunscreens as a stabilizer, is an endocrine disrupter, and can cause skin irritation. Endocrine disruptors interfere with your body’s endocrine system by mimicking naturally-occurring hormones like estrogen (the female sex hormone), androgen (the male sex hormone), and thyroid hormones, causing overstimulation of these hormones

Physical sunscreens – Work by reflecting UV radiation
• Starts working once applied, and provides UV-A and UV-B protection.
• Does not irritate your eyes or skin.
• Ingredients protect by forming a layer on the surface of your skin. So no harmful ingredients are absorbed directly into your bloodstream.
• Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the most common ingredients in physical sunscreens. These compounds show no sign of degradation after more than two hours of sun exposure.

The FDA has considered zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to be safe ingredients, but they do have their downsides. They tend to feel thick and greasy, and since they lay on top of your skin, they generally leave a white residue behind. But with new technology, there are more physical sunscreens coming to the market that apply on clear.

April is National IBS Month

What Is IBS
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder of the large intestine that causes pain, cramping and abdominal distress.  The walls of your large intestine are lined with concentric rings of smooth muscle that contract to help move waste through the body.  Approximately 1 in 5 Americans report symptoms of IBS, of which 35-40% are men, and 60-65% are women.  It continues to be one of the most common disorders seen by physicians.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Cramping and pain in the abdominal area that is relieved after a bowel movement
  • Periods of diarrhea or constipation
  • Change in stool frequency or consistency
  • Feeling gassy or bloated, potentially with abdominal distension
  • Observing mucus in your stool

I know how debilitating IBS can be.  I have suffered from gastrointestinal issues for several years.  The best things I have found that have really helped are changing my diet and limiting my stress. There is no generalized diet that works for everyone, so please consult your physician before following any of the recommendations below.

  • Avoid eating large meals. Eat smaller meals more frequently. Instead of using a large plate, use a smaller one.  This will trick your mind into thinking you are eating the same amount of food.
  • Eat slowly and chew your food. Digestion starts in the mouth with the help of enzymes produced by your salivary glands.  Amylase breaks down carbohydrates, while lipase breaks down fats.
  • Don’t feel inclined to eat everything on your plate. Just because you see it, doesn’t mean you have to eat it.  This is especially important when you eat out.
  • Eliminate all grains from your diet (e.g. wheat, barley, rye, rice, couscous, millet, buckwheat, oats, flaxseed and quinoa). These are known to cause gastrointestinal inflammation.
  • Eliminate all dairy from your diet (grass-fed butter or ghee is okay).
  • Eliminate or limit nightshades (e.g. eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, goji berries, and tobacco). These can trigger inflammatory responses within your body.
  • Limit the amount of phytate-rich foods that you consume (e.g. nuts, seeds, beans), as the phytic acid actually inhibits the enzymes needed to break down food. If you do eat them, make sure that they are properly cooked or sprouted/ soaked.
  • Add a cup or two of peppermint tea to your daily routine. My favorite is by Traditional Medicinals.
  • Make time for yourself during the day to concentrate on your breathing. Avoid breathing into your chest. Instead, take full, deep breaths by letting your abdomen protrude outwards while inhaling deeply. This is wonderful because it helps reduce stress we experience throughout the day. By breathing deeply, your diaphragm is also massaging your large intestine.

Massage for IBS
Massage is very beneficial for IBS sufferers. Doing daily abdominal self-massage has really helped me.  Granted, doing it yourself isn’t nearly as effective as having a trained massage therapist do it for you. But you were given two hands, so I encourage you to massage away!

My favorite way to massage my abdomen is by applying 3-4 drops of peppermint essential oil in the palm of my hand, and then applying it to my abdomen in clockwise circles from the right side of my abdomen (ascending colon), across the top below my rib cage (transverse colon), and then down the left side (descending colon). Repeat this sequence multiple times.










I highly recommend using only Young Living Essential Oils when applied directly (neat) to the skin.  Essential oils that you find in health food stores only contain 5% essential oil, while the other 95% are solvents used to extract the essential oils. These solvents may cause harmful reactions.  Young Living Essential Oils are 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade, which means you could even take them internally. Remember to only put on your skin what you are willing to eat!

About Your Kidneys

Your kidneys are a pair of organs that sit on the posterior wall of your abdomen, below your ribcage.  Each kidney is about the size of your fist.

The function of your kidneys is to filter your blood.  Your kidneys filter all the blood in your body multiple times a day.  They remove waste, control your body’s fluid balance, and regulate the balance of electrolytes.  As your kidneys filter your blood it is removing waste and excess fluid. That waste is then made into urine.  The urine is collected in the part of the kidneys called the renal pelvis.  It travels down the ureter, collects in the bladder, and then travels down the urethra to be excreted from your body.

It is possible to lose up to 90% of your kidneys’ function without experiencing any signs or symptoms.

Is It Back Pain or Kidney Pain?

The most common type of back pain is also known as musculoskeletal or somatic pain.  If you cut your skin, the pain you experience is somatic. You also experience somatic pain if you stretch a muscle too far, or exercise for a long period of time.

Pain that comes from our organs (e.g. kidneys) is also known as visceral pain and is often described as generalized aching or squeezing. It is caused by compression in and around the organs, or by stretching of the abdominal cavity. Sometimes visceral pain may radiate to other areas in the body, making it even harder to pinpoint its exact location.

Somatic pain is usually easier to locate than visceral pain. It also tends to be more intense.

If you have been experiencing prolonged back pain for an extended amount of time, please consult your physician to rule out any possible kidney issues.

Prolonged Sitting and Chronic Kidney Disease

A study that was published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases shows that prolong sitting can increase your chances of developing chronic kidney disease.  But the results from this study show significant gender differences.

More than 5,650 participants (ages 40 to 75) were analyzed, and put into groups based on two factors: how long they spent sitting each day, and the amount of time they spent exercising.

Men were able to balance out the negative effects of sitting for prolonged periods through exercise. However, exercising to make up the negative effects of sitting is not as effective for women. Women need to focus more on reducing how long they are sitting.

The risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) was decreased by more than 30% in women who reported fewer than 3 hours of sitting time, compared to those who reported over 8 hours.

Men who reported less than 3 hours of sitting time saw a reduction of 15%.  Men who were physically active for at least 30 minutes each day, reduced the risk of developing CKD by at least 30%.  However, exercise had no significant impact on the risk for women.

 Massage and Kidney Issues

Your kidneys filter waste from your blood to make urine.  One of the many benefits of massage is to help push toxins out of your muscles and into your bloodstream.  When your kidneys are not functioning properly, added stress is put on them.  Massage will only stress your kidneys out even more.
