The Impact of Embracing a Ketogenic and Paleo Diet on My Health

Food has always been a central part of my life. I love everything about it—the process of creating delicious dishes and, of course, the sheer joy of eating them. However, if there’s one aspect of food that I despise, it’s doing the dishes. Despite this small inconvenience, my passion for food has remained unwavering.

Yet, not all foods have been kind to me. Over the years, I have faced numerous challenges with my digestive system. Certain foods would send me racing to the bathroom, while others would leave me in agony from severe bloating. This tumultuous relationship with food led me on a journey that eventually transformed my life and my health through the ketogenic and paleo diet.

My transition to a ketogenic and paleo diet didn’t happen overnight. It began back in August 2009 when I was first introduced to the paleo way of eating. Since that pivotal moment, I have never looked back. Adopting the ketogenic and paleo diet has been a life-changing experience.

Throughout my life, I have always grappled with digestive issues. The number of emergency room visits I have endured is countless. My father would often joke that I was “full of crap.” I vividly recall my mother packing Metamucil Wafers in my lunchbox during middle school. Interestingly, I loved the taste of those apple cinnamon wafers and considered them cookies.

It wasn’t until 2010 that I finally received a proper diagnosis. I was diagnosed with celiac disease, splenic flexure syndrome, and villous atrophy of my small intestines. These diagnoses began to shed light on the lifetime of digestive issues I had experienced and underscored the importance of the ketogenic and paleo diet for my health.

Upon receiving these diagnoses, I knew I needed to make significant changes to my diet. I adopted the paleo lifestyle with unwavering dedication, sticking to it from 2009 to 2016. During this period, I experienced significant improvements in my health and well-being thanks to the ketogenic and paleo diet.

However, in 2016, my health took a drastic turn for the worse. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, and adrenal dysfunction. These new health challenges forced me to temporarily close my business, Nourishing Massage, for nine months. It was a difficult time that made me reevaluate every aspect of my life, including my stress levels, mental state, and, most importantly, my diet.

On April 21, 2016, I decided to embark on a new dietary journey—a ketogenic lifestyle. This decision marked a turning point in my quest for better health. The ketogenic diet, a key component of the ketogenic and paleo diet, focuses on low-carb, high-fat foods, which helped me manage my symptoms and improve my overall health. Since adopting this lifestyle, I have never looked back.

Living a ketogenic and paleo diet has not only improved my physical health but also enhanced my relationship with food. I have discovered a plethora of delicious recipes that align with my dietary needs and preferences. Today, I am excited to share some of my favorite recipes with you. Early Struggles and Discoveries

Reflecting on my early years, I realize just how significant food and health were in shaping my experiences. Digestive issues were a constant companion, often overshadowing the joys of childhood and adolescence. While my peers were carefree, I was preoccupied with managing discomfort and the unpredictability of my digestive system. Adopting the ketogenic and paleo diet was a crucial step in addressing these issues.

In school, my lunchbox was a source of both comfort and embarrassment. The Metamucil Wafers my mom packed were a testament to my ongoing battle with digestion. Though I loved their apple cinnamon flavor and considered them a treat, they reminded me that I was different. These early experiences instilled in me a deep desire to find a way of eating that would bring harmony to my body, which I eventually found in the ketogenic and paleo diet.

The Turning Point: Diagnosis and Acceptance

The diagnosis in 2010 was both a relief and a challenge. Learning that I had celiac disease, splenic flexure syndrome, and villous atrophy of my small intestines provided clarity. Finally, I understood why I had suffered for so long. However, this newfound knowledge also meant that significant changes were necessary.

Transitioning to a paleo diet was my first step toward reclaiming my health. The paleo way of eating, which emphasizes whole, unprocessed foods, was a stark contrast to the diet I had previously followed. It required me to eliminate many foods I loved, but the promise of better health made the sacrifice worthwhile. This was my introduction to the principles that would later guide my ketogenic and paleo diet.

Adapting and Thriving

From 2009 to 2016, the paleo diet became my new normal. I embraced the principles of eating lean meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. The results were remarkable. My digestive issues lessened, and I felt more energetic and vibrant. It was a transformative period that restored my faith in the power of food to heal.

Yet, life is seldom a straightforward journey. In 2016, new health challenges emerged. Being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, and adrenal dysfunction was a crushing blow. These conditions brought with them chronic pain, fatigue, and a host of other symptoms that disrupted my life. The physical and emotional toll was immense, leading me to close my business for nine months.

This period of forced introspection was both a curse and a blessing. It allowed me to take a hard look at every aspect of my life. I realized that despite my commitment to the paleo diet, there were other areas of my health that needed attention. Stress management, mental health, and further dietary adjustments became my focus.

Embracing the Ketogenic Lifestyle

On April 21, 2016, I made another significant dietary shift by adopting a ketogenic lifestyle. The ketogenic diet, characterized by high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carbohydrate intake, offered new hope. This approach helped stabilize my energy levels, reduce inflammation, and manage my chronic conditions more effectively. The ketogenic and paleo diet became integral to my daily routine.

The transition was challenging but rewarding. I learned to create meals that were both satisfying and beneficial to my health. The ketogenic diet became more than just a way of eating; it was a path to healing and empowerment. It enabled me to take control of my health in a way I had never thought possible.

Looking Ahead

Today, I am grateful for the journey I have undertaken. The challenges and setbacks have taught me resilience and the importance of listening to my body. Living a ketogenic and paleo diet has transformed my relationship with food and health. It has empowered me to make choices that support my well-being and has allowed me to enjoy food in a way that is both nourishing and delicious.
