When something negative turns into something positive
Cupping therapy is one of the oldest healing treatments used by ancient Egyptians and Chinese doctors. An advantage of cupping therapy is that it utilizes suction, or negative pressure to pull on the underlying soft tissue and release it from superficial to deep. Cupping draws fresh blood to the area which stimulates an increase in the body’s natural healing response. It also moves Qi (life force energy) by balancing energy disturbances within the meridian system. Cupping also engages the parasympathetic nervous system which allows for deeper relaxation.

What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts heated glass, plastic, or silicone cups on your skin to create a vacuum or negative pressure that causes the underlying soft tissue to release the layers of tissue from superficial to deep. After the cups remained stationary on your skin for a few minutes, the therapist might choose to slide the suctioned cups across the surface of your skin. The sliding of the suctioned cups allows the adhered soft tissue to become more pliable.
What Should I Expect After My First Cupping Therapy Session?
After receiving cupping for the first time you might be shocked by the color of your skin where the cup was located. What you see is not a bruise. The color can vary from a light pink to a dark purple, but it is usually a shade of red. Sometimes tiny red bumps will appear or clear fluid will be brought to the surface of the skin in the form of a blister. The more discolored the marks are on your skin the more stagnant blood and fluid you have in that area. Over time, the coloring will lessen in intensity as the stagnant blood and fluid are brought to the surface of the skin so it can be recirculated by the body. Although the marks look painful they typically are not. They will not hurt like a bruise but they may be tender post-session similar to a deep tissue massage. The marks tend to go away within a few days.
Why is Cupping Therapy Better than a Massage?
Cupping is also the only technique that a therapist is unable to do with our hands. Your therapist typically puts downward pressure on an area to get it to release from superficial to deep. But with cupping the negative pressure or vacuum that the cups create allows your tissue to be lifted and thus allows it to be released from superficial to deep.
The beauty of cupping is that the treatments are cumulative. After a series of treatments focusing on key areas of dysfunction, the cupping marks will diminish as the areas of stagnation are cleared. Cupping Therapy is available to everyone in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls and the surrounding communities. After your first cupping session, I’ll be able to recommend a treatment plan to maximize your results.
