What is Massage Therapy?
Today, massage therapy is practiced worldwide with many different modalities to help aid, heal, reduce and relax, common ailments we suffer from on a daily basis, such as headaches, pain in the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, low back, hips, knees, ankles, and inflammation due to arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis or tendinosis.
Massage is the act of rubbing, kneading, or manipulating the soft tissues of your body, including connective tissue, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Massage techniques are commonly applied with the fingers, hands, forearms, elbows, knees, or feet. Percussion devices may be used as a self-massage tool in place of manual therapy. Many modalities except cupping use force and direct downward pressure on the skin to the affected area to promote change within the tissue.
How Does Massage Therapy Work?
Massage Therapy works by calming your Sympathetic Nervous System (fight or flight response) and engaging your Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest and digest) to bring a sense of calm to your mind and body. Oxytocin and endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin are secreted, which are essential for healthy mental functioning.
Massage increases the circulation of the blood by moving the stagnant blood through the congested area. This aids in allowing new blood to flow in the targeted muscles, which speeds up the delivery of the nutrients they need to function properly.
Massage also stimulates the Lymphatic System by increasing lymphatic flow to aid in disposing of metabolic waste that can cause increased pain and delay your recovery.
Why Isn’t Massage Just a Luxury?
Massage should not be considered a luxury. It should be considered a vital part of self-care that has a positive ripple effect on us and the ones we surround ourselves with daily. Experts estimate that upwards of 90 percent of disease is stress-related. And nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high-stress levels. Reducing stress alone can increase your vitality and state of mind. Many people that receive massages on a regular basis feel that it’s more than just relief from their physical pain. They realize that receiving massages help with the emotional pain that they are suffering from too. This is because our emotions can manifest physical ailments within our bodies. The emotional balance massage provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits.
How is Massage a Form of Self-Care?
The beauty of therapeutic massage is that the benefits are compounded the more frequently you get massaged. The more you get, the more it does. Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you’ll be and how youthful you’ll remain with each passing year. Budgeting time and money to receive a massage is truly an investment in your health. Remember: just because massage feels like a luxury or a pampering treat doesn’t mean it is any less therapeutic. Receiving regularly scheduled massages should be a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan.
